Entry 10 Usage of slang.

Yes I do use slangs in my everyday conversation this because of the group of friends I interact on a day to day basis. Culture in Trinidad has that influence on us that it becomes so natural to use slang when sending messages. Using ‘slangs’ is an easier way to relate to each other than using words that one will have to stop and explain the meaning. It is also time consuming.
Yes and No in reference to if slang is appropriate. It’s most appropriate when socializing with your friends of you age group. However it can be seem uneducated or disrespectful if you use slang to someone older than you. Also when deliver public speech it may be good to use slang in comparison to what is the topic of conversation because it can help you to keep your audience in tune to you but using too much of slang then can also show a form of lacking vocabulary skills and communication.

Article name –  How to lead change

The perception of this article is that there are three simple steps to take in order to lead change in an organization. They are identifying the need for change, leading change and managing change. A leader will need recognize when the company needs to change any aspect in the firm, understanding of how he should go about leading and making sure that the process is going according to plan and that key individuals are maintaining their role in change ,if he unable to do so, then he cannot lead change.
After reading this article my perception formed is that indeed a leader of change will have to be aware when change needs to be taken and follow the precautious steps involve. However, I disagree with the writer that it’s only three simple steps in order to lead change. In addition to leading an individual will need to have the confidence, knowledge, wisdom and ability to lead. Making changes require careful thinking because it decisions that can make the company grow or set the company up for failure. The leader will need to be judgmental when idea are brought to his attention for the changing process in that he need to decline the ones that he thinks won’t make sense and be confident when choosing. Thus leading change is not an easy task if an individual don’t hold these qualities.

Entry 9 My Personal Opinion on being a “Effective Verbal Communicator”

Yes I am an effective communicator. When having one and one interaction I am very clear in my message I try not to make statements that can be interpreted in two different meanings. I do listen to what the other person is conveying and try to give constructive feedback at that point in time to what is being said. However when it comes to sharing in a crowed nervousness can be a barrier to my communication. My clarity of speech needs improvement in that I may not pronounced word clearly when I concentrate on controlling my hand movements when speaking. For linguistic sensitivity I demonstrate it depending on the situation and conversation at times. For example if I really upset with someone I do not  speak continuously with no pause, I will make sure that I take my time to explain reason clearly and give time for them to understand one point before moving along to the other.

Entry 7 My Group Presentation

The country that my group presented was on Japan. Japanese’s believe that actions speak louder than words. They tend to use fewer words when speaking but more action this is because they are more nonverbal communicators than verbal.  The Japanese believe in harmony in so doing they rely on tone of voice, facial expression and posture to interpret ones feelings.  They believe when speaking only positive words should be spoken on the flip side if they don’t not like or don’t agree they won’t embarrass a person instead they uses the term “it will be difficult.” Majority of the times Japanese will indicate with a nod that they are listening the never agree or disagree. To communicate with a Japanese one will need to be a good observer of body language. Eye contact is considered disrespectful especially to elderly however looking at someone neck or tie is preferred. The Turkish or Monogolian is the language that is spoken and in so doing Japanese do speak very slowly when conveying a message.
The Japan culture for me was slightly strange in that how they can encode and decode messages by observation. However, I did learn that sometimes is good to not speak and listen to what is being channel, observe facial expression and body movements it just might help you to believe or understand what is being said. I have taken the Japanese style of observing one’s movement while interacting especially in arguments to sit and observed while formulating how best I can respond with fewer words and send a message that will be understood.

Entry six. In class Presentation

The in class presentation on culture showed different ways in which a country can communicate verbally and non-verbally, languages spoken and the religion practice. I learn that while some countries may accept certain non-verbal gestures in other countries it can be seen as disrespect or. For example in Hati staring is not considered rude but as for japan and Yoruba of Nigeria staring can be considered as disrespect. The communication in greeting is also different in Hati it is said that men must greet with a shake hand and women with a kiss however in japan touching is a definitely not allowed they preferred a bow and in Nigeria men will place their left hand on shoulder while shaking hands and women are the first to extend hand before greeting.
In verbal communication the Japanese don’t believe in speaking much they more base there communication on nonverbal speaking. Hati speak Creole and French however it is said that the lower class, middle and upper class may have a barrier in communicating due to lack of understanding the other class. Whereas the Nigerians uses proverbs or songs they believe that they can enlighten the atmosphere of the conversation and get there meaning across in that way.
Through the presentation in class I have really learn to appreciate other people cultures and the way they communicate. It brought to my awareness that the ways in which I may greet an individual of a different culture can be disrespectful and also encourage me to look at other cultures so that in the near future I can communicate effectively and be a better communicator.

ENTRY 5!! Culture Impact on non- verbal and verbal communication

Culture in Trinidad has impact the way I communication through local dialect and English language.

Our local dialect in Trinidad helps us to communicate in a fun way that is we will use slangs and dragons while communicating. It can seem unprofessional to a visitor if they were to hear us and as well can be a barrier to communication if they are not familiar with our local dialect.  As it is stated “There’s a time place for everything” definitely I wouldn’t use our dialect if I am on the work place or giving a speech instead I use of language which is English (standard).  In my nonverbal behaviors I use a lot of gestures to communicate, for example rolling my eyes indicates that whatever is being said to me I ether am disagreeing or I am bored of the topic.  My Culture has impact my verbal communication in both negative and positive that is, I am brave to speak out when I am upset about something my tone voice will increase and decrease and on the negative I am a little shy when a direct question is thrown I may fumble because with my culture one will want to make sure that they don’t respond out of context, it will look to the other person or persons that you are illiterate or miss interpreted

Entry 4 Article In Trinidad and Tobago Newspaper

Article name - Do you know your true self worth?
Wednesday 8th February 2012 (express)

The article enlightens and expands one’s creative thinking and encourages one to reexamine his/her self in the aspect of business success. The perception is that how much money you make in the business world will be determined by how much you think you are worth, the service that you provide and the time and effort that is put out. If one wants to make a lot of money, he will need to believe that his skills, ability and creativity are valuable enough to bring success. Understanding one’s is worth is the stepping stone of success this is because one will operate in efficiency, effective and with confidence therefore the service that will be given out will be of high quality. According to “Giselle Hudson” writer of the article states, “Success is not the result of making money; earning money is the result of success and success is in direct portion to our service.”

My perception form after reading this article is that if one wants to earn money it’s the hard work that you put out will determined how that customer or supervisor will pay you. The more you diligently and honestly contribute will increase the income you receive. I also believe in personal ROI that is return on individual if one continues to perform on a high level, build relationship with customer they will always want to come back to you but one must evaluate themselves each day and see where there is room for improvement and work towards it, in that no one will be able to say that your service isn’t worth the money.
